Instructions for travelling with a Medusa Gamma-Ray Spectrometer

When transporting a Medusa gamma-ray spectrometer on a commercial flight, please follow the instructions below to ensure safe transport and to avoid unnecessary delays during security screening.

Packing the Sensor

  • Always transport the sensor in its original shipping case or packaging. This provides the best protection against shocks and mechanical damage during travel.

  • Carry the sensor as hand luggage. This minimizes the risk of damage, loss, or rough handling associated with checked baggage.

  • Ensure that the sensor manual, brochure, and any supporting documentation are included with the equipment. These documents can be useful when answering questions from security personnel or customs officers.

Security Screening and Customs

The gamma-ray spectrometer contains a dense scintillation crystal designed to absorb gamma radiation. As a result, the sensor may appear as a dark or opaque object on airport X-ray screening systems.

If security personnel or customs officers have questions:

  • Present the included manual and brochure.

  • Explain that the instrument is a passive radiation detector used for scientific and geophysical measurements.

  • Clarify that the device does not emit radiation and does not contain any radioactive material.

  • Explain that the detector material absorbs X-rays and gamma rays, which is why it may appear as a dark region on the screening image.

In most cases, providing the documentation and a brief explanation of the sensor's purpose is sufficient to resolve any questions during inspection.

Additional Recommendation

Allow extra time when passing through airport security, especially when travelling internationally. Security personnel may wish to perform additional inspection of the equipment due to its unusual appearance on X-ray images.
